Today was rain, rain, and more rain. We delayed leaving the hotel until nine so we could miss the rush at Pine State Biscuits. The last two years we visited the location on SE Belmont; however that location was closed in March, so we went to the location on NE Alberta. We lucked out and found a great parking spot and were able to get a seat at the counter with no wait whatsoever – the last location had seating for 10 people maximum and there was almost always a 10-15 minute wait just to order. The person who took our order even remembered us from our visit last year – it is definitely a great place to go. I had a Reggie (as always) and my mum had a biscuit with butter and honey. I am not a big fan of either biscuits or sausage gravy but the combination of fried chicken, cheese, bacon and sausage gravy on a biscuit is “da bomb”.
After breakfast we headed south, through the never-ending Portland traffic (and pouring rain), to the Woodburn Outlet Mall. My mum found herself a pair of crocs and I was able to find a new pair of running shoes and a waterproof jacket at Columbia Sportswear. I also grabbed a sweet 650-1300mm lens for my camera at Shutterbug. All in all it was a productive shopping trip.
We then headed back to the hotel where we chilled for a bit and watched Food Network until we left to go for dinner at Fire on the Mountain Wings. In previous years we have gone to the Interstate location but we have always had trouble finding parking and it is usually quite busy. Tonight we went to the Fremont location and were pleasantly surprised to not only find parking but also a much larger restaurant with several available tables. For some unknown reason, I decided to get an order of El Jefé wings to go along with my fried pickles. I know how hot they are (250,000 Scoville units) so I should have just gotten the Extra Hot wings. After half a wing I had tears streaming down my face and it took a good ten minutes before the burn left my lips. I finished off my pickles and decided to keep my wings and eat them cold – I’ve found that they tend to be a bit more bearable that way.
After dinner we headed back to the hotel and did our wiki-research and also some research for tomorrow’s shopping trip before heading to bed. With the rain I didn’t take many pictures today – hopefully tomorrow will be a bit nicer and I will be able to show you how beautiful Portland is.
Talk to you all soon.
