We started this morning with breakfast at the hotel and then wandered down the few blocks to the mall to do some shopping. We did more browsing than anything else, but Mum lucked out and found something that she had on her to-buy list. Before heading back to the hotel, we stopped for a coffee for Mum and an iced tea lemonade for me at Starbucks. By the time we got back to the hotel, it was almost time for lunch so we chilled for a bit watching the Food Network and eating some leftovers.

After lunch, we drove to Manito Park to browse the gardens. We started with the Japanese Garden, which had a sign stating the rules of the garden…one being, no cameras…needless to say I was unimpressed.

After the Japanese Garden, we went over to the perennial garden, where we wandered around looking at the flowers (and for seeds) and then headed to the conservatory. We also encountered several species of local wildlife.

From Manito Park, we drove to Riverfront Park where we took a short walk across to Canada Island and I took a few pictures.

We spent an hour or so at the hotel before walking to the restaurant for dinner. Tonight was our second Food Network Stop at Hill’s Restaurant. We shared a Scotch Egg as an appy, which was unbelievably good. Mum had the Malaysian Chicken Satay and I had a New York Strip Steak. Although this was one of the pricier Food Network stops we have visited, it was definitely worth the price.

Tomorrow we will be heading east to Coeur d’Alene and then south to Grangeville. Talk to you soon.

P.S. I apologize for the choppiness of tonight’s update, but I have been battling a slow, unreliable wi-fi, an uncooperative WordPress, and an awkward photo workflow. Hopefully tomorrow I will have these issues fixed.

After a breakfast of some of our leftovers from yesterday, we gassed up the car and were on the road just after nine. Our first stop was the Aplets & Cotlets Factory in Cashmere where we watched them make their candy and also picked up some treats to bring back with us.

From there we headed to Wenatchee where, for the second year in a row, I got misplaced and we ended up on a different road than originally planned. This actually worked out in our favour as the route that we had planned to take was actually the route we took last year and the route we had planned to take last year, we took today. We headed south on SR-28, following the Columbia River, then headed east until Soap Lake where we turned north on SR-17.

We stopped for our picnic of leftovers at Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park and after eating decided to explore the Visitor’s Centre which had displays about the topography of the area. It turns out that during the last ice age one of the world’s largest waterfalls existed here (Wiki). We went back outside and took some pictures of the Coulee’s edge where the Falls used to exist and then decided to head farther up the Columbia to the Grand Coulee Dam. We had originally decided to forego the detour to the dam, but after stopping at Dry Falls and reading about the history, we decided it was worth the 30 or so extra minutes it would take.

We arrived at the Dam and took quite a few pictures from the observation area at the top of the road heading down to the Visitor’s Centre. neither of us were  very interested in going to the centre or on a tour, but we were both glad we had made the detour. We then jumped onto SR-174 and headed south to Wilbur where we met up with US-2 and headed towards Spokane. We arrived in Spokane just after check-in and decided to relax at the hotel before dinner.

We had a couple of choices for dinner – Picabu Bistro or Elks Public House. After checking the menu at Picabu (A LOT of cilantro in everything), we decided on Elks. When we came here two years ago, I had the lamb sandwich and Mum had a seafood pasta. This visit, Mum had a cup of smoked chicken & potato soup with a small honey chipotle salad. I, of course, had my lamb sandwich with a side of potato salad and we shared an appy of roasted garlic & onion bread. Quite surprisingly, I was able to keep half of my sandwich for tomorrow – last time I left no hostages. Out of all of the Food Network places I have been, their lamb sandwich is one of my top three fave meals.

After dinner we headed back to the hotel to watch So You Think You Can Dance, google the questions of the day, and upload my pictures to my computer. Uploading pictures, however, has proven harder than expected so I will only have a few to share with you today.

Tomorrow we are exploring Spokane, though we have no specifics.

Talk to you soon.

We started our day with a quick breakfast at the hotel, followed by a hunt for a Tim Hortons that didn’t have a lineup out into the street. It appears that the power outages that affected our hunt for dinner last night was still affecting people today – according to The Weather Network 500,000 households were still without power across the province. We  grabbed a couple of coffees and headed towards the border crossing at Aldergrove.

We arrived at the border and only had a few cars in front of us – quite a change from the usual hour-long crossing at the Peace Arch. Our border guard was totally confused by the reason for our trip. Not only did he not understand what we were planning to do, he didn’t understand why we were doing it. He appeared to just give up trying to figure it out and wished us a good day – easiest crossing EVER!

We arrived in Lynden a few minutes later and were quite disappointed. The “Dutch Town” had a couple of windmills and there was an obvious attempt to make the tops of the buildings resemble the ones in Holland, but it was definitely not what we expected. Below is one of the windmills that we saw in Lynden.

Lynden Windmill

After Lynden, we headed to Bellingham and then down to Everett where we headed east on US-2 towards Leavenworth. Last year when we took this route we were met by forest fires on the west edge of town. The burnt remnants of that fire still exist, but the greenery that is so prevalent on the west coast is starting to reclaim the area.

We drove around several for several minutes when we arrived in Leavenworth, looking for a parking spot. We eventually gave up and parked in a pay parking lot that had a board with each stall’s number listed and slots for money (quite weird). After parking we headed towards München Haus for lunch. Mum had German Potato Salad with a pretzel and I had a Jalapeño & Cheddar Wurst with a pretzel and a Raspberry Wheat Ale. We both thoroughly enjoyed our lunch which more than adequately satisfied our appetite. One thing we both thought was interesting was the mustard bar – definitely a first for both of us.

Mustard Bar

After satisfying our hunger, we headed to the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum. Last year we had to leave town before the museum was open so we had only had time to visit the gift shop, but this year we made sure that we had time to explore the actual museum. I hadn’t been too enamoured by the gift shop and wasn’t expecting to enjoy the museum, but surprisingly, I did.

By this time it was almost time to check in so we headed to the hotel. While Mum napped for a bit, I chilled and watched some TV until it was time for dinner. I had originally selected a couple of German restaurants that we could possibly go to, as I know Mum likes German cuisine, but after our filling lunch, we decided to find something light. The hotel clerk recommended a couple to us and we headed towards Uncle Üli’s. I had half an Üli’s Turkey sandwich  & Kokanee and Mum had half an HLO (Holiday Leftover) sandwich. Another good choice for a non-Food Network restaurant.

Tomorrow we are heading to Spokane. Depending on the weather and our mood, we will decide in the morning on the route we will take. Until then, I will leave you with a few pictures that I took in Leavenworth.

Talk to you soon.

Today was a very short day of travelling. Mum and I arrived at the ferry terminal with plenty of time to spare, though with the rain, decided to stay in the car to wait for the sailing. We also spent the sailing in the car as the wind and waves made exploring above the vehicle deck, unappealing.

Arriving 10 minutes late in Tsawwassen, we headed towards our hotel, stopping briefly at what seems to be the only mall in Langley to pick up some last minutes supplies for our trip.

After chilling for a bit at the hotel, we decided to head out to grab some dinner. By this time, it was pouring rain, and everywhere we tried going had an hour to hour and half wait for a table. Finally, wondering why it seemed that EVERY restaurant in town was full, I asked a hostess and found out that quite a few of the restaurants were without power. At this point, feeling hungry and deflated, stopped at Superstore for salads to take back to the hotel. Definitely not the way we planned on starting out trip, but tomorrow is another day.

Tomorrow we are crossing the border at Aldergrove, visiting the small Dutch town of Lynden and then carrying on to Leavenworth where we will be staying tomorrow.

Talk to you soon

It’s hard to believe that it’s that time of year again. In about 36 hours, Mum and I will be embarking on our fifth Food Network adventure. I feel less prepared this year, but I hope that means we can be more spontaneous. That being said, this is the third draft of this trip – the first change being the addition of Yakima and the second being the detour caused by the Oregon fires. I hope we don’t have to detour again because of the fires, but they are forecasting rain for the next few days, so that will hopefully assist the firefighters with their efforts.

I have booked hotel for each night and have lists of places to eat and things to do along the way. We are planning visits to Lynden, WA (a Dutch town), Grand Coulee Dam, the Columbia Gorge, various gardens and even a Shakespearean play at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. We are only travelling 3,600 kilometres (2,250 miles) on this trip, so I hope we will be able to do more exploring than we usually do. We plan to venture out into areas of Portland that we have always meant to visit and never had time – this trip is devoted to those “places”…with Powell’s Books and our regular food haunts include, of course.

Last year, I prepared daily synopses for my blog that auto-posted each morning. I did not do that this year as I don’t want to be held down to a specific schedule…okay, who am I kidding? I lost track of time and I didn’t get them done. I still think it gives us an excuse to be more flexible though. You may also notice that Mount St. Helens has been bypassed this year – I have decided to devote time to my first trip there and will visit with my husband in the near future – I will, however, be driving between both Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier on US-12 when we go from Yakima to Olympia, so maybe Mother Nature will be nice to me and allow me some good shots.

I will post again on Saturday night from Langley, letting you know how our ferry crossing went. Until then I bid you adieu.

We started our morning even before the sun rose. Because of our desired breakfast stop we wanted to make sure that we left ourselves plenty of time to get to the ferry (even with the reservation). While Mum checked out, and made sure that our “comped” parking was, in fact, taken off the bill – it was – I put the suitcases in the car. We then popped across the street to grab a Timmie’s coffee before heading across the Lions Gate Bridge to breakfast.

We went to Tomahawk BBQ Restaurant, which was featured on both You Gotta Eat Here and Triple D. Although both Mum and I have been here before this was the first time that Mum had experienced their delicious breakfasts. I had a half order of Eggs Benny and Mum had a half Sunrise Special with a poached egg. As we waited for our breakfast we soaked in the ambiance provided by the Native artifacts that cover the walls and rafters. Unfortunately, I was unable to take any photos to share as they ask people not to take pictures

IMG_7414IMG_7415

We had time to kill before we needed to be at the ferry terminal so we decided to take Marine Drive instead of the Upper Levels Highway. Anyone who has driven up Taylor Way and taken that insane stretch of road will understand our decision. We enjoyed our leisurely drive along Marine Drive, despite the numerous bicyclists that were also using the road. We took them in stride…who could blame them; it was a beautiful day. We did, however, forget that we needed to get on the highway in order to get on the ferry. So, after backtracking a couple of exits, we were back on track and we arrived at the terminal with plenty of time to spare.

IMG_7418

We decided to stay in the car as we were right by an opening in the side of the ship…why fight for a seat up top when we had comfy seats already. I took a couple of pictures as we were heading out of the bay and I was able to look back towards Vancouver and English Bay. Although it was hazy the skyline was unmistakable…this is the view I always remember of the city I fell in love with in ’82.

_DSC0944

Mum and I spend some time doing Facebook quizzes until I lost service and then she read while I did a crossword. The silence on deck was broken by the sounding of the ship’s horn. We looked up and realized that we had sailed into a fog bank; which was quite disconcerting, but we went back to what we were doing as we knew it was just sea fog. It did, however, stay with us until we docked in Nanaimo.

IMG_7422IMG_7423IMG_0461

We drove up the hill to the Timmie’s, where F was waiting for us, with a rose for me, as always. After a quick picture by the car, we headed in for a coffee and then took another picture with our Timmie’s cups. We transferred the ridiculous amount of stuff that I accumulated on the trip into my car, said some quick goodbyes, and we were off…Mum heading north and me and F heading south.

IMG_7429IMG_7431

It seems like just yesterday that I was meeting up with my mum at the border and we were starting our adventure; but now it is day 16 and the end of another voyage of discovery. We had some awesome weather, unbelievable food, and also some unexpected happenings (both good and bad). Through all of it, We survived and made memories that will last a lifetime.

I want to thank my dad for sending me on my first trip with my mum back in 2010…without him we would never have started our annual food adventures. I also want to thank F for holding down the fort for me every year as I escape this Rock we live on. I also appreciate all the restaurant and hotel reviewers on the web that have made planning these trips so much easier. This year I also would like to thank my bosses who allowed me the time to go off exploring.

Finally I want to thank Mum for making these annual trips possible. She has afforded me my idiosyncraties; both restaurants and trip routing…and also my occasional meltdowns when things don’t go exactly as planned. We’ve learned to make our long days at the start of our trip; plan shopping for weekdays; research parking and restaurant hours; and most importantly to make lemonade when the Fates seem to be against us. Thank you Mum…I had a blast!

Thank you all for reading and I will talk to you again soon.

Vancouver to Vancouver Island

Vancouver to Vancouver Island

Our trip has come to an end, but the memories will last a lifetime.

We had initially planned to have breakfast at the hotel but now we have decided to throw in one last stop. Since we are heading across the Lions Gate Bridge to get to the ferry we decided to visit Tomahawk BBQ for breakfast. This will be our second visit to this stop, which was featured on both Triple D and You Gotta Eat Here.

After breakfast we are heading to Horseshoe Bay for the 10:40 ferry back to the Island…and reality.

Talk to you soon.

Today was filled with ups and downs, but overall it was a good day. We started with breakfast at the hotel and then mulled over where we should spend our day. Since we didn’t want to move the car, and Mum didn’t want to walk too far, we decided on catching the bus to Granville Island Market.

We walked around for a while, looking at the local wares, and also the over-priced touristy items that were available. Mum was able to find her whole yellow peas and I found, not only green papaya, but dried Jolokia chili peppers.

We had originally planned to go to Go Fish but after walking half a mile to the restaurant, we saw the ginormous lineup of people waiting to get in and decided against it. Then Mum suggested we go to The Sandbar as Giada De Laurentiis had recommended it on one of her shows. We took a look at the menu and I decided to pass; partly because of the price and partly because the one thing that I thought I would be able to eat (fries) came with truffle butter. I realize that may sound divine to some but that is way too far outside of the box for me, and in my opinion, wrong on so many levels. We ended up going to The Keg as both Mum and I needed to eat, and there were very few choices left. The food was good and the Molson Canadian I had seemed to put me in a better mood.

IMG_0433IMG_7397IMG_0447

After lunch we headed back to the bus and decided to go to the mall for a little shopping before we went back to the hotel. I had planned on going to Pacific Centre but just as we were getting off I saw an Old Navy with a giant SALE sign in the window – I was sold. I got some great deals on shirts and after we were done, we realized we didn’t really need to go to the mall after all. We stopped for a drink at the coffee shop just down the street and sat outside so we could people-watch. Then we headed back to the hotel for a rest before dinner.

Dinner was at American Cheesesteak which was featured on You Gotta Eat Here. Man the food was good! I had The Cowboy (shaved prime rib, crispy fried onions, spicy BBQ sauce, bacon mayo and cheddar) and Mum had The Arista (Italian style pork roast, sauteéd onions & peppers, provolone, arugula and dijon mayo). We also shared an order of poutine, although I’m pretty sure I had most of it. It was made with mushroom gravy which is way outside my comfort zone, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

IMG_0449IMG_0450IMG_7411IMG_7409IMG_7410

After dinner we walked back to the hotel along Granville Street. The street that was full of kids and tourists during the day was filling up with the bar crowds that pack the sidewalks on Saturday nights. I’m pretty sure that Mum was glad when we got back to the hotel.

So there it is…our last full day of our trip. We will be getting up fairly early tomorrow so we can fit in one more stop before we hit the ferry.

Thanks for reading and talk to you soon.

Today is going to be up in the air. We are looking at exploring Chinatown, with a possible stop at Peaceful Restaurant, which was on DinersDrive-Ins & Dives, for lunch.

Since we are in Vancouver, a visit to Stanley Park is almost guaranteed, especially since the weather is supposed to clear up.

Other than that, we will take the day as it comes.

Talk to you soon.

We awoke to a torrent of rain that showed no sign of relenting. After a quick breakfast of leftovers at the hotel, I dodged the raindrops while I loaded the suitcases into the car. Before nine o’clock we were on the road – heading north to the border…and home to Canada. Because of the rain, we decided to forego another visit to the Capitol Building…there’s always next trip.

We drove up to the Seattle-Tacoma area without too much issue; weather- and traffic-wise, but ran into ridiculous traffic once we hit Tacoma. Thankful for the HOV lanes, we zipped past most of the traffic jams…almost missing our exit to the 405…I happened to notice the exit at the last minute and cut over five lanes (safely) just in time to exit onto the bypass around Seattle. We continued in the HOV lanes on the 405, making great time, until it was time to exit back onto the I-5…another exit I almost missed.

By this time the rain had subsided to a light drizzle and stayed that way until Mount Vernon where we stopped for our final Walmart shop. We were prepared with our shopping lists, and we able to get most of the items we were looking for – I was especially happy to find my pizza-flavoured Combos. Mum and I also picked up our normal bottles of alcohol – tequila for me; rum for her. After gassing up the car, we were off again and heading to the border. We made it across the border with very little fuss or wait and before we knew it, we were heading towards Vancouver on Highway 99.

We made it into Vancouver around 2:30 and went straight to the hotel. After some disagreement over the price, room type and parking arrangement; we got settled…or at least as settled as we could be in a room so small. Realizing that my mood probably had a lot to do with my need for food, we headed across the street for a coffee, and were greeted by a beautiful sign…

IMG_7378

We had a coffee and then decided to grab an early dinner at DD Mau’s (as featured on You Gotta Eat Here). We had originally wanted to go to Tomahawk BBQ in North Vancouver, but were worried about losing our parking spot at the hotel. We walked the half-mile to DD Mau’s and we happy to see that, not only was there no lineup, there was seating inside.

IMG_7380IMG_7381IMG_7382

This was Mum’s “must-visit restaurant” of the trip so I was very glad that it worked out so well. I got an order of spring rolls (which came with a garlic aioli) and a duck bánh mì (which was ridiculously spicy, but in a good way). Mum had a chicken & spring roll noodle bowl, which she added a bit of sriracha to, in order to kick it up a notch. We were both quite happy with our selections.

IMG_7386IMG_7385IMG_7383

After dinner we headed back to the hotel and watched the Triple D marathon that is always on Friday nights. After Mum went to bed, I sat down to write this blog – it would have been done quicker if I wasn’t continually reconnecting to the hotel’s crappy low-speed WiFi. Looks like I will have something else to complain about to the front desk in the morning. For now I will make lemonade, and bid you all adieu.

Thank you for reading and I will talk to you soon.
